The Big Idea: Cheers. NYC prohibition drinking dens.
One of London’s most talked about bars. And as far as we are aware the first bar in the world that has a fridge as its method of entry. Behind the fridge door is a dark staircase only lit by a flashing neon sign exclaiming ‘Thrills’ leading to the ‘mayors door’. But most importantly it is a bar that is much more than a smeg fridge door, it is a cosy but tongue in cheek and a true escape from the hustle and bustle of streets of Spitalfields above.
Inspired by the ‘speakeasy’ movement in New York we aimed to capture the essence of the owners and the spirit of the ‘mayor’ including the ‘mayor’ himself hidden within the beams of the ceiling. Other touches include the gold ceiling contrasting with the pared back feel of the rest of the space.
This secretive basement…..has one of the most unusual entrances in London. A subterranean space that doesn’t just trade on its party trick of having a Smeg fridge as an entrance…. The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town is a genuinely great cocktail bar. Destined for big things, and, right now, the best bolthole in the Spitalfields area’
